Our client, a conservationist, needed a Windows based system to improve his processes of measuring both standing trees and logs.  To meet his needs, we utilized the log and tree scaling techniques laid out by Purdue University's paper FNR-191 by Daniel Cassens.  Based upon the paper, ForeSTats was built to allow for volume calculations for the Mesavage & Girard formulas for Doyle, Scribner, and International rules for both 16-ft and 12-ft logs.

ForeSTats is laid out to allow the user to easily enter their surveying information.  They start with the Land Owner's information, then to Property, Stands, Plots, and the last screen of Trees.  This meets both the requirements of producing accurate information as well as keeping historical records.

Reports are generated based upon the selected property.  Information on the reports calculate Basal Area, Volume, Average Diameter, Number of Trees, and Number of Trees/Total Number by species and by species within class.  It also has the capability to calculate volume by species group by 2-inch diameters.  As well as being printed, reports can be exported to Adobe Acrobat PDF, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Rich Text formats.

The administration screens allow the user to control the system as well as seeing the values used within the calculations.  The Prisms, Slopes, and States & Territories allow the user to view the referencing values used for selection and calculations.  Species and Classes allow for maintaining the values for both tree species and classes.  Export will allow the exporting of the surveying information from the system to an XML format.  Synch will synchronize multiple systems together to allow for a group of surveyors to share information.

Unit of Measure screen will allow the user to select the type of volume calculations they need.  Supported calculations using the Mesavage & Girard formulas are Doyle Sampling, Scribner Sampling, and International Sampling for both 16-ft and 12-ft logs.  By using the formulas for the volume calculations, this will allow for accuracy and unlimited height and diameter measurements of trees.
